The Engineering Council Graduate Diploma
You can enter for Graduate Diploma units either by having already been awarded the Engineering Council Certificate, or through having gained other appropriate examinations (not necessarily set by the Engineering Council), by being exempted by a professional institution (in Britain), or through an equivalent procedure as determined by the qualifying procedures of the Engineering Council Examinations Department. You will need to be registered as a candidate for which the Engineering Council Examinations at City & Guilds makes a small charge to all applicants.
To gain the Engineering Council Graduate Diploma, you must pass five technical units and an individual Project Report that you will submit.
The units you take in order to gain an Engineering Council Graduate Diploma need to be chosen from about 30 technical units set each year at this level. You will need to be sure, before you begin your studies, that the combination of units is agreed by your professional institution to provide an acceptable academic list for your eventual award of Chartered Engineer (CEng).
There is, however, nothing to stop candidates applying for entry to one or more units in this series, to fulfil "top up" requirements. The Graduate Diploma is not awarded to candidates who do not fulfil the full requirements as specified above.
- Entry to the Graduate Diploma unit is through possession of the Engineering Council Certificate, or their equivalent as may be agreed by Engineering Council Examinations at City & Guilds.
- Candidates are free to choose five units from the choice of available units at Graduate Diploma level, referring to their professional institution for advice on acceptability. They must successfully complete these and a Project before completing the necessary steps for the award of Engineering Council Graduate Diploma.
- Candidates may repeat units as many times as they wish, but this will be known to the professional engineering institution and in some circumstances may count against an application for professional registration. It will not, however, count against successful completion of the Graduate Diploma requirements.
- Institutions may, in certain circumstances, impose time constraints on the time taken to complete the Graduate Diploma.
- Candidates are required to pass all five units and the project from the available choices in order to qualify for the Engineering Council Graduate Diploma.
